Internet Privacy

At a recent tech meeting, we discussed internet privacy.  Specifically, how blog posts, facebook posts, photo posts can lead to someone getting fired from a job.  I sent an email blast to the staff about thinking before they post.  I did cause quite a stir, to say the least!  but I think the staff got the idea.

Teachers (and all professionals) need to think globally and long-term before they post.

There's No Green in CMYK

Everyone says that they are interested in beng enviromentally concious and green, however, there is more printing and paper usage than ever before in schools. I have been keeping stats on this, as well as how much paper and printer cartridges are used.

Even though teachers have things at their disposal like online testing, online resources, smartboard interactive software, like the notebook and the student response systems, they go throough paper like swimmers through water!

Even after much education and prompting (from the "Printer Fairy"), they claim that they need the paper for instruction.  They do not seem to be changing HOW they teach with technology.  They just seem to ADD it as another tool (and another thing to print!)

Authentic Activity Ideas are Everywhere!

The ideas abound for authentic activities!  Many teachers may claim that they don't know how to "invent" aithentic activites for their classes.  But, authentic activity ideas are endless - they are everywhere! I've had a bunch of them today, and it is not even dinner time yet!

Think about your day.

Did you drive today? Take a bus? Walk?  Think about the engineering and logistsics that goes into vehicles, traffic, traffic lights, construction.

If you went outside, what about climate? Temperature? What about appropriate clothing? Processes in nature?  The seasons changing?

Did you go to the bank? (Money, Interest rates, the economy, loans...) Post office? (Logistics of delivery, packing items for shippingGrocery store? Don't get me started on grocery store ideas!  I worked in a grocery store for 4 years, and the amount of time, knowledge and expertise that goes into the grocery store business is astronomical. From scheduling workers to ordering supplies and products to how and where items are displayed.

Think about that food from the grocery store - every food had an origin somewhere - how did it get from seed to the store shelf?

Authentic activity ideas are everywhere! Look around! Think about it!
